Chief executive leadership and financial performance in family businesses: a systemic review

Contexto: Las empresas familiares constituyen una de las formas organizacionales más extendidas a nivel mundial, y su sostenibilidad depende en gran medida de la capacidad de liderazgo y toma de decisiones estratégicas del director ejecutivo. Objetivo: Analizar la influencia del liderazgo del director ejecutivo en el desempeño financiero de las empresas familiares. Metodología: Se realizó una revisión sistemática de literatura bajo la metodología PRISMA 2020, con enfoque cualitativo. La búsqueda se efectuó en las bases de datos Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO y Dialnet, considerando estudios publicados entre 2020 y 2025 relacionados con liderazgo directivo y resultados financieros en empresas familiares. Resultados: Los hallazgos evidenciaron que el 75 % de los estudios identificó asociaciones positivas entre las características del director ejecutivo y los indicadores financieros empresariales. Asimismo, el 60 % destacó el liderazgo transformacional como un factor determinante para fortalecer el desempeño organizacional, debido a su influencia en la innovación, compromiso organizacional, visión estratégica y adaptación al cambio. Conclusiones: El liderazgo del director ejecutivo constituye un factor estratégico para el desempeño financiero de las empresas familiares. Los estilos de liderazgo orientados a la transformación, innovación y desarrollo del capital humano favorecen la sostenibilidad organizacional y la generación de valor económico a largo plazo.
Background: Family firms represent one of the most prevalent organizational forms worldwide, and their sustainability largely depends on the leadership capacity and strategic decision-making of the Chief Executive Officer (CEO). Objective: This study aims to analyze the influence of CEO leadership on the financial performance of family businesses. Methodology: A systematic literature review was conducted following the PRISMA 2020 guidelines, employing a qualitative approach. The search was performed across the Scopus, Web of Science, SciELO, and Dialnet databases, covering studies published between 2020 and 2025 related to executive leadership and financial outcomes in family firms. Results: The findings revealed that 75% of the studies identified positive associations between CEO characteristics and corporate financial indicators. Furthermore, 60% highlighted transformational leadership as a determinant factor in strengthening organizational performance, owing to its influence on innovation, organizational commitment, strategic vision, and adaptability to change. Conclusions: CEO leadership constitutes a strategic driver for the financial performance of family firms. Leadership styles oriented toward transformation, innovation, and human capital development foster organizational sustainability and long-term economic value creation.
